Our latest blog series "Driving on Sunshine," features the real-world experiences from our co-owners and customers as they navigate New England in electric vehicles (EVs). From Smart Cars to Ford Lightnings, from Chevy Bolts to Ioniq 5s, these stories will highlight the variety of ways to drive electric, and explore how pairing EV with solar can turn everyday driving into a cleaner, quieter, more enjoyable and more cost-effective experience.
Driving electric has been an awesome experience and I have zero regrets in making the switch. I was honestly a bit hesitant at first because it was such a foreign concept to me, but it has made driving fun again and my commute to work is one of the best parts of my day. I drove a Tesla Model 3 for 6 years and have now made the switch to a Ford Lightning. Merging onto the highway on an on ramp and blasting out of a toll booth with rapid acceleration are especially fun, it never gets old!
I put a Clipper Creek Level Two charging station in my garage which gets me about 25 miles of range per hour of charge, so fully recharging overnight is easy. I can also charge at work at one of the multiple Level Two Charging Stations there. Maintenance? Well, in the 6 years that I owned the Tesla Model 3, I went through 2 sets of tires and a bunch of washer fluid. Oil changes and noisy mufflers are a thing of the past for me. Warming the vehicle up inside the garage in the wintertime without filling the entire garage with Carbon Monoxide is really nice too.
Cleaning up New England’s transportation sector is critical in the fight to lower our region’s carbon emissions. Driving an electric vehicle that is oftentimes charged by the solar array at my home or at work gives me entertaining, guilt free driving and I can’t recommend it enough!
I have 17.2 kilowatts of ReVision solar (2017 & 2019) and charge my Ford Mustang Mach-e GT at home almost exclusively. I added the second array for my previous car (a plug-in hybrid Honda clarity). I'm very happy with both my solar power and my solar charged EV.
We have 2 Tesla Model Ys. My wife liked our first so much, we had to buy another. Having them was part of our decision to buy into a solar farm, along with installation of house-wide heat pumps. We are starting our 5th year and could not be happier.
There are problems - for example, the door handles are the worst design ever. But that doesn't have anything to do with the EV nature of the car!
