Our latest blog series "Driving on Sunshine," features the real-world experiences from our co-owners and customers as they navigate New England in electric vehicles (EVs). From Smart Cars to Ford Lightnings, from Chevy Bolts to Ioniq 5s, these stories will highlight the variety of ways to drive electric, and explore how pairing EV with solar can turn everyday driving into a cleaner, quieter, more enjoyable and more cost-effective experience.
I've driven fully electric since 2021, and I wouldn't do it any other way now. I have a 2021 Tesla Model Y that is about to hit 100,000 miles. I fully expected it to be a fun car with the instant acceleration, but I didn't realize how much better driving electric would be. In my past I worked many late nights, and one of the worst things was stopping by the gas station on my way home after a 10 hour day. Now I simply go straight home and plug in, no stops required, and no oil changes every few months.
After a few years of ownership, with road trips to Cleveland, Ohio in the summer, and northern Vermont for skiing, the entire family agreed driving electric was the better experience. My wife then sold her gas car and got a Honda Prologue. My kids love showing off the tech to friends, and every road trip stop takes longer for the family to get back in the car than it takes to charge.
During a 24-hour power outage in April of 2024, my home eventually got cold, and my kids got a little antsy. I ended up putting them in my car in the garage where they munched on Nutella and watched Netflix for hours while sitting in 70-degree comfort, no worries of exhaust poisoning! 4 years, many road trips, and 100K miles later I can't imagine going back to the inconveniences of an old-fashioned car!
My 2013 RAV 4 (EV) & my friend's RAV4 EV; not many in MA. 2604 made. 44kWh battery. I have a 2013 Toyota RAV4 EV, a 2022 EV6, and a Cmax PHEV. I use free electricity at various level two charging stations (found on Plugshare) and at home, a level 1 and 2 charging station, powered by a ReVision solar installation. Investing in an EV with zero-emissions and quiet operation is well supported with free kWh!
