As we mentioned in our 2018 yearly round-up, battery storage is growing rapidly, with installed volume doubling from 2016 to 2017, doubling again from 2017 to 2018, and already in January 2019 we installed 50% as many battery systems as we did in 2018!

The explanation for this rapid uptick in battery storage is simply because installing the units increasingly makes more sense. Costs have decreased, and customers have increasing concerns around emergency backup and protecting their solar investment from utilities tweaking their pricing structure. In addition, the new Massachusetts SMART program offers an additional incentive for battery storage, when paired with solar, with a total benefit of up 50-75% of the battery cost!

In Maine, we still have a smart grid pilot program in place that offers a grant from Efficiency Maine for installing a battery.
