Animal Refuge League of Portland MaineOur ‘check in for Charity’ candidate for April is the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP), an organization that provides temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals, and places as many animals as possible into responsible and caring homes.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland also works to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.

About the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland

Adopt a Dog Animal RefugeThe ARLGP is first and foremost an adoption agency. Every year they take in more than 4,000 stray, abandoned or owner surrendered animals in the Greater Portland area.  They are committed to providing the best possible care for these animals by ensuring they receive the love, dignity, respect and medical attention they deserve. Each animal is given the time it needs to find a home regardless of its age, color or medical condition until the time it is reunited with its family or adopted into a loving and responsible home.

Founded by Maine Governor Percival Baxter, ARLGP’s current location in Westbrook was built in 1957 and named for Governor Baxter to honor his legacy of caring for animals.  Their facility suffered a fire this past winter which destroyed the facility’s linens and dog toys – a situation to which the community responded with an outpouring of support.

They’ll be involved in a number of events this spring and summer, and stay tuned to their Facebook page where you can keep up to date on the shelter and about their animal friends looking for homes (several ReVision staffers report having wonderful pets courtesy of the ARLGP).
