AllEarth Solar Series 20 4.7-kilowatt dual-axis tracker installed at a home in Londonderry, New Hampshire. This tracker uses GPS to follow the sun and will produce up to 45% more electricity than the same solar panels on a rooftop array.

ReVision Energy now offers dual-axis solar trackers built by Vermont-based AllEarth Solar.

The AllSun Tracker is a dual-axis active solar tracker which uses a motor and GPS (Global Positioning System) to turn the solar electric panels both from east to west and up and down to ensure the panels always follow the sun’s elevation.

Compared to a fixed array of the same production capacity, the AllSun tracker will produce up to 45% more electricity. Flexible size and seamless performance make this tracker well-suited for both residential and commercial installations.

ReVision Energy has partnered with AllEarth Solar to offer installation of AllSun Trackers throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and parts of Vermont. We installed the first dual-axis solar tracker in New Hampshire in 2011, and in 2012 we installed the first dual-axis solar tracker in Maine.  Since then, we have installed over a dozen in the region, and were among a select group of installers invited to a dealer training in early 2015.

How A Solar Tracker Produces Extra Power

The ideal orientation for a fixed solar array is 195° on a compass – a bit west of magnetic south on the compass is “true” south which is ideal for solar installations. A roof pitch of 22.5° (5/12) to 45° (12/12) is great, and up to 45° off-axis is workable depending on how steep the roof is. However, many homes are not ideally oriented for rooftop arrays, or have other technical or aesthetic challenges, which is where a solar tracker can be a fantastic match.

A few of the situations where customers have chosen a tracker over a rooftop array:

  • A flat or rubber roof that would require additional racking to reach ideal angle
  • The desire for maximum production possible. A fixed array just can’t compete with a tracker’s performance
  • Already maximized solar roof – when your roof is full, a tracker allows you to put on more power! In this case, our customer wanted a tracker to provide electricity for two electric cars

While we also install plenty of fixed ground mount solar arrays, the tracker offers a compelling alternative – more power production in a smaller footprint of yard space. In a clear open field (the best place for a tracker), the tracker will produce up to 45% more power than a fixed solar array (according to manufacturer AllEarth Solar and validated by real-world data from several ReVision Energy installations). This means – a Series 20 (20x 240W solar panels) will produce roughly as much power as a nameplate rating 6.7KW fixed array!

The Series 24 AllSun Tracker with standard efficiency panels will produce roughly 9,600 kWh of electricity each year for this home in Exeter, New Hampshire.

AllSun Trackers are available in two sizes – the Series 20, which will carry 20 solar panels, or the Series 24, which will carry 24 solar panels.

The Series 20 is designed for an individual or small family with a modest need for electricity. It will produce up to 8,500 kilowatt-hours per year depending on the wattage of panels installed (constantly increasing), quality of your site, and solar resource of the year.

The Series 24 is designed for a larger family or business and produces up to 10,200 kilowatt-hours per year. For those requiring greater amounts of electricity, multiple trackers can be installed with a minimum of 50′ separation.
