Thanks to supporters of the UNH Forest Watch program, who successfully fundraised $500 to go towards their applied research on New England forest ecosystems.
For June our focus is on Kieve-Wavus Education, an organization that empowers young people and fosters environmental stewardship through experiential programs, camps for youth and adults, and guidance from inspirational role models.
About Kieve-Wavus Education
Since 1926, Kieve has evolved from a small summer camp for boys, nestled on the shores of pristine Damariscotta Lake, into a highly acclaimed and wide reaching, year-round educational organization. With the addition of Wavus Camp for Girls 8 years ago, Kieve-Wavus Education is able to help and reach out to many more kids, parents and adults.
Kieve-Wavus Education offers both a boys and girls summer camp, Leadership School, Bridge Year School, Environmental Stewardship programs, Veterans Camps, and even writer’s Conferences. Their camps and programs reach out to over 8,000 youth, students and adults each year, building leadership skills and an appreciation of the environment.
A sense of environmental responsibility is maintained throughout Kieve-Wavus’ operations, with campus renovations that include super-insulated, low-energy use buildings, extensive use of natural ventilation and daylighting, water conservation and solar assisted hot water. You can see an example of their existing solar hot water array installed by ReVision Energy.
