Seacoast Eat Local NHThanks to supporters of Preble Street, who were able to help us raise $500 for their soup kitchen and other outreach programs in December.  Now, with a new year upon us, Check in for Charity returns to support Seacoast Eat Local.

Seacoast Eat Local connects people with sources of locally grown foods and advocates eating locally for the health of our environment, community, culture and economy.  They organize winter farmers’ markets, co-produce Seacoast Harvest, sponsor workshops and events, and provide information on healthy and local eating through their email newsletter, blog and website, www.seacoasteatlocal.org

While everyone associates local foods with summer farmer’s markets, one of the unique offerings organized by Seacoast Eat Local is an amazing Winter Market season that connects consumers with local farmers offering everything from staple storage crops (onions, potatoes, carrots, potatoes, squash, etc.), greens (yes, beloved greens in winter!), eggs, dried beans, humanely raised meat, maple syrup and more (see a list of available foods).

These winter markets (held twice a month throughout the winter in Rollinsford and Exeter, NH) allow consumers to eat local all year, supporting the local agricultural community and fostering better nutrition.

Seacoast Eat Local has recently brought SNAP, or food stamp, access to area farmers’ markets. Currently, 1 in 8 Americans receive food stamps, but are not able to use them at area farmers’ markets because the markets lack the equipment and staff to support access. Folks of all income levels want access to the delicious, wholesome foods grown by our area farmers, and the health and economic benefits of having more people eating these foods benefit our whole community.
