32 panels on the roof of the Herring Gut Learning Center help the nonprofit to reduce costs and carbon emissions, and to support the health of delicate ocean ecosystems that are the subject of their educational programs.
Each year, the system will generate roughly 13,041 kilowatt-hours of electricity, offsetting the equivalent of over 22,500 miles driven in a gas-powered car.
The Herring Gut Learning Center provides science programs for a variety of students from the local school district in Rockland, Maine, including hands-on experience in the business of aquaponics. In addition, the Center offers summer camps, internships, and Professional Learning workshops for teachers and educators.
