As electricity costs rise and power outages become more common, battery storage is quickly becoming one of the most valuable upgrades a homeowner can make. Ditch the clunky, heavy, propane generator and switch to a sleek backup battery like the FranklinWH or Tesla Powerwall – you won’t even notice when the power goes out.
In addition to the peace-of-mind and energy independence batteries provide, you can now earn cash by enrolling in various programs across New England. Depending on where you live, you may qualify for annual payments, upfront rebates, or low-interest financing that can make installing a battery system a no-brainer.
Here are some of the incentives and rebates currently in effect throughout New England:
Maine
The Program: Efficiency Maine’s Small Battery Pilot Program
The Incentive: Mainers can earn around $600 per year, per battery. That’s $6,000 per battery over the course of 10 years.
Details: By occasionally allowing the grid to use your stored energy during “battery events,” you get paid, automatically, every year. Battery owners can earn up to $550–$600 per battery per year, paid by Efficiency Maine. With a 10-year program term, that results in about 25% off your first battery and 50% off additional batteries for your home. (More info on our blog post: Get Paid to Own Battery Storage in Maine)
Eligibility:
- Must be a Maine utility customer (residential or small commercial)
- Battery must be from an approved manufacturer and interconnected per local utility guidelines
- Solar is welcome but not required
- Both new and existing systems are eligible
Massachusetts
The Program: ConnectedSolutions through Mass Save
The Incentive: Massachusetts homeowners can earn approximately $500 to $1,000+ per year by enrolling an eligible battery in ConnectedSolutions, with many participants earning around $1,200 annually based on battery size and performance
The Details: By occasionally allowing your utility to use stored energy from your battery during summer peak demand events, you earn annual performance payments while maintaining backup power protection for your home. ConnectedSolutions events typically occur between June and September and help reduce strain on the electric grid during periods of highest electricity demand.
Customers can also take advantage of 0% financing through the Mass Save HEAT Loan Program to help cover battery installation costs. Our dedicated team of employee-owners can help you navigate the Mass Save loan and ensure you’re taking advantage of every cost-saver out there.
Some Massachusetts homeowners may qualify for ConnectedSolutions+, an enhanced version of the program available in select National Grid service areas where additional battery capacity can provide greater grid benefits. National Grid has identified select communities such as Bridgewater, Medford, Worcester, Lynn, Salem, Foxborough, Nantucket, and others as potential participants, though eligibility ultimately depends on the home’s specific location and utility service area.

Eligibility:
- Must be a customer of a participating Massachusetts utility (Eversource, National Grid, Unitil, Cape Light Compact, Berkshire Gas, and Liberty Utilities)
- Battery must be a qualifying system from an approved manufacturer.
- Solar is welcome but not required for many participating battery systems.
- Battery must be enrolled in the ConnectedSolutions program through the manufacturer or installer.
- Homeowners may also be eligible for 0% HEAT Loan financing for battery storage installation costs
- Homeowners in certain National Grid service territories may be eligible for enhanced incentives through ConnectedSolutions+. Eligibility is location-specific.
- Participation in ConnectedSolutions automatically includes the transfer of applicable Clean Peak Energy Credits (CPECs) to program administrators, with no additional action required from the homeowner.
- Incentive availability and program details may change over time and can vary by utility territory.
New Hampshire
The Program: New Hampshire Clean Energy Fund (NHCEF) Home Battery Incentive Program, through Eversource
The Rebate: Eversource customers can receive an upfront incentive of $230 per kWh of battery capacity, up to $3,000 per residential account
Details: This is an upfront rebate program for when you install and enroll an eligible battery. In exchange, your battery participates in summer demand response events, helping reduce strain on the electric grid during peak demand periods. Funding is provided through the New Hampshire Clean Energy Fund, and participants must remain enrolled for at least three years.
Eligibility:
- Must be an Eversource New Hampshire electric customer in good standing.
- Battery must be from an approved manufacturer and enrolled in the demand response program.
- Solar is welcome but not required.
- Battery must have been purchased after October 1, 2022.
- Both new and qualifying existing battery systems are eligible.
- Must participate in demand response events for a minimum of three years.
The Program: ConnectedSolutions Demand Response, through Eversource
The Incentive: Eversouce customers with Tesla Powerwalls or FranklinWH batteries can earn money for allowing Eversource to use energy stored in the battery at times of high demand
Details: Incentives for home batteries are based on the average kilowatt (kW) used per event, averaged over the season. All events will occur between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. If there is an extreme weather event in the forecast, they will not draw energy from your battery. A typical home battery can earn $1,125 per year.
Eligibility:
- Must own a Tesla Powerwall or FranklinWH
- Must be an Eversource New Hampshire electric customer in good standing
- Solar is welcome but not required.
