Best Practices for Efficient EV Fleet Charging

Electric Vehicles (EVs) and vehicle fleets are the perfect pairing; with lower maintenance and operating costs, direct control over the fuel source, and added environmental benefits, EVs offer fleet managers more control over their vehicles. However, operators can only capitalize on the benefits of electrifying a fleet with reliable charging infrastructure. 

One of fleet managers’ primary responsibilities is ensuring their vehicles are ready for deployment. For electric fleets, this readiness relies on the availability of well-maintained charging stations. Although these stations are easier to maintain than traditional gas pumps, their upkeep is still vital for sustaining operational efficiency. 

At ReVision Energy, we install and service charging stations for various applications. Our entire residential sales fleet is electric, with twelve Level 2 chargers constantly in use throughout the day at our headquarters. Josh Baston, ReVision’s EV Infrastructure Operations Manager, shares some lessons we’ve learned about EV charging service in our fifteen years of installing charging stations. Here are six key takeaways fleet managers should consider for keeping their charging stations running smoothly:

User Education 

Josh emphasizes that educating vehicle users is critical to minimizing servicing needs. “It boils down to making it easy for the fleet users to do the right thing.”  Proper handling of the chargers is essential. Here’s how we do it at ReVision: 

  1. Easily accessible instructions:

    One of the easiest ways to ensure people are informed is to place user instructions on the chargers themselves. This placement will help guide and remind users of best practices when handling the chargers. These instructions should include elements like step-by-step charging instructions (how to plug the vehicle in), troubleshooting tips (what to do if the charger doesn’t start and indicators of a successful connection), and maintenance reminders (keeping the area clean and conducting regular visual checks). Instructions should include specifics unique to your fleet as well. At ReVision, we use RFID cards to activate and collect charging data. When first implemented, we had some issues with users not understanding how to activate the chargers with the RFID cards. Clear and accessible instructions solved this problem.

  2. Cable management:Proper cable management is another way to minimize misuse. Many installers, ReVision included, offer a retractable cable system that automatically coils the cable back into the charger, ensuring the connector isn’t left on the ground, where most of the damage occurs.

Preventative Measures

Adopting proactive preventative measures is crucial in managing an efficient charging station network. By staying prepared, fleet managers can safeguard against unexpected issues and maintain high service reliability. Here are some tips: 

  1. Power-sharing chargers:

    To address electrical capacity concerns, fleet managers should consider chargers that share power rather than requiring additional capacity. This approach allows for the expansion of charging infrastructure without significant and potentially costly electrical upgrades. Power-sharing chargers can communicate with each other in a closed network, reducing their power output to stay below an established threshold. These chargers enable operators to set power limits for an entire group of chargers.

  2. Contingency plan:Having a backup plan in case of an outage will ensure fleets are still prepared to operate in unexpected situations. This plan could be as simple as knowing the location of the closest non-network or public fast charging stations.

  3. EV charging service provider:Maintain direct communication with your charger provider to know who will service your chargers, especially since many providers outsource their servicing. If a maintenance contract is established, it should specify response and repair times, as well as uptime requirements.

  4. Spare chargers:Keep a spare charger on hand to minimize the charger outage time. This strategy will also reduce maintenance costs, allowing immediate replacement without waiting for repairs. If a broken charger is under warranty, the replacement charger sent by the provider will act as the new spare.

Effective management and maintenance of EV charging stations are fundamental to harnessing the full potential of electric vehicle fleets. Through user education and preventative measures, fleet managers can increase the lifespan and reliability of their charging infrastructure.

Solar panels offer many advantages, making them a compelling feature for any homebuyer. Here’s how you can make an informed decision about purchasing a home with solar panels.  

Why Buy a Home with Solar Panels? 

Buying a home with solar panels will lower your electricity bill and carbon footprint, and increase your home’s resiliency and value.

  1. Lower electricity bill:

    One of the biggest perks of solar panels is the savings on your electricity costs. Solar energy can cover a significant portion of your home’s energy needs. Depending on your location, sun exposure, and energy usage, you’ll see your electricity costs drop significantly.

Questions to Ask    

Before you buy, there are some important questions to ask.

What if the seller owns the panels?  

If the seller owns the solar array, that’s great news! You won’t have any ongoing lease payments, and you’ll have complete control over the system. If you’re considering a home with ReVision-installed panels that are still under warranty, we will waive labor expenses incurred to troubleshoot, repair, or replace any faulty solar products incorporated into your solar installation.  

What if the seller leases the panels? 

If you’re considering buying a house with leased solar panels, you’ll likely need to take over the lease payments. It’s possible to make your purchase offer contingent upon the seller paying off the lease before closing. Make sure you understand the lease terms and how they impact your budget. The leasing company usually handles maintenance and repairs, so check the service agreement for details. Also, make sure the lease transfer is appropriately documented and approved.

What if the panels were installed by a licensed professional? 

If installed by a licensed professional, the installation company can tell you about the system’s age, past maintenance, and purchase terms. If the original installer is out of business, identify the solar panels and inverter manufacturer. Then, contact a certified local installer to see if they know the model and can inspect the system.  

What if the panels were self-installed?

If the array was self-installed, check with the seller to see if the system has a manufacturer’s warranty and is still valid. Self-installed systems might have a higher risk of issues, so consider getting a professional inspection.

What if the system is nearing the end of its life?  

If the solar system is nearing the end of its usable life, you’ll need to consider a few things. Get quotes for replacing the panels and check if the inverter needs an update. Modern panels offer better performance. Plan for the safe removal of the old system. If it’s a home with ReVision-installed panels, our service team ensures they are removed responsibly and not thrown into a landfill. What if the system isn’t nearing the end of its life?

Remember, solar installations last 30 to 35 years. If the solar system isn’t nearing the end of its usable life, that’s a big plus! Estimate how many more years it will work efficiently and review its maintenance history to ensure the system has been well-cared for. Ask to see a few months of electric bills and check the system’s energy output to verify it will meet your needs.  

What about warranties?   

There are generally two kinds of warranties for solar installations: workmanship and manufacturer. Workmanship refers to the physical installation and wiring of the system. Manufacturer warranties cover equipment in case of product failure during the warranty period. Warranties can be transferred with the sale of a property, so discuss the status and transfer of the warranties with the seller.   

Check with the installation company to see who covers the workmanship and manufacturer warranties. At ReVision, we cover our workmanship warranty with our 24/7 in-house service department. Many solar installers use third-party companies to cover their warranty offerings. Sometimes these warranties come with fine print that might not justify the extra cost. Why pay upfront for something that isn’t broken?  

Lastly, remember that any modifications or alterations to the solar panels or system by unauthorized personnel may void the warranty. Always consult with the manufacturer or installer before making any changes.

How to Navigate the Solar Boom: Questions to Ask a Solar Company

The solar industry is rapidly expanding; it is predicted that the amount of solar installed in the U.S. will quadruple over the next ten years. Our government recognizes that we need solar to combat the climate crisis and is providing incentives to help boost the expansion. The Biden administration recently announced the creation of the Solar for All program, which provides $7 billion to deliver solar to low-income households across the country.  

With this growth comes an increase in the number of solar companies. And, as solar emerges as a profitable alternative to fossil fuels, it inevitably attracts its share of bad actors. In pursuit of profits, some solar companies prioritize their own interests over those of the consumer. Knowing this, potential customers need to be well-informed to avoid being misled by unethical business practices.  

Don’t Get Scammed: Unethical Sales Practices

Buyer beware! Some solar companies have adopted aggressive sales models to maximize profits and expand their customer base quickly. These models incentivize salespeople to prioritize profits over customer satisfaction and transparency. Some “solar sales bros” take to social media to openly brag about the earnings they achieve through selling solar systems. One video features a door-to-door salesman describing his approach as “being a sheep in the doorstep, and a wolf in the door.” This example highlights a trend towards high-pressure sales tactics in the industry. 

Many solar installers outsource their sales operations to freelance networks that work purely on commission. These networks negotiate a minimum price with installers, which is the lowest amount the installation company will accept to install a system. For example, let’s say that minimum price is $3 per watt installed. Networked salespeople are then allowed to mark up the price, often $5 per watt or more, and pocket the difference. This potential gain can tempt salespeople to overpromise the system’s capabilities or understate the long-term costs, putting homeowners at risk of making a decision that will hurt them in the long run. 

Regulatory Gaps and Business Ethics 

How do salespeople get away with these unethical sales tactics? One reason is that the business structures of these larger firms often prioritize rapid profit generation. These large solar companies have used complicated financial investment models to accelerate their growth, intensifying the push to acquire more customers. Many national companies package together hundreds of consumer solar leases into asset-backed securities (ABS) to sell to investors, allowing companies to immediately access capital that would otherwise accumulate gradually over the lifespan of the leases. This financial maneuver, while innovative, increases pressure on the company to quickly expand their customer base in order to keep these ABS-based financial models running.   

It’s this pressure for rapid growth that can lead companies to overlook unethical behaviors among their salespeople. There have been many instances where the terms of solar panel leases and loans were obscured by salespeople eager to close deals quickly — regardless of whether the conditions were fully understood or beneficial to the customer. The drive to hit sales targets and the opportunities for financial deals with investors can often take priority over fundamental values of customer service and honesty.

Another common tactic of unethical solar companies is advertising “free” solar panels. This kind of messaging is misleading, creating a false sense of urgency and misinformation – there is no such thing as a free solar installation.  While a generous federal tax credit and other state-specific incentives are available to residents across the nation, no state or agency will pay for you to go solar. As a result of these ads, homeowners may enter agreements based on inaccurate information, ultimately finding themselves with unexpected financial obligations and lower-than-expected savings.

The Role of Responsible Business Models 

These issues highlight the importance of choosing a company with a responsible business model. That’s the strength of employee-ownership models like ReVision, where employees are owners.   1. Research the Company:

    Before agreeing to anything, research the company and check its reputation. Ask your friends, neighbors, and colleagues for recommendations. Look through a company’s reviews and social media comments to get an idea of what other customers say about their experience.

  2. Avoid Rush Decisions: Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics such as “today only” offers. Solar is an investment, and businesses should understand the importance of their customers making informed decisions.

  3. Read the Contract Thoroughly:Understand all the terms and conditions before signing any documents. Look for hidden fees, cancellation terms, and understand what the contract covers. Do not sign incomplete contracts or those with blank spaces.

  4. Energy Savings Projections:Salespeople might present optimistic energy savings and cost projections. Review these projections carefully and compare them with current utility rates. Understand the factors your salesperson is using to calculate these savings.

  5. Trust Your Instincts:If something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and feel comfortable saying no or asking the salesperson to come back at another time after you’ve had a chance to think it over.

  6. Ask Questions:Don’t hesitate to ask detailed questions about the products or services offered. A credible salesperson should be able to provide comprehensive and straightforward answers.   • What does your solar workmanship warranty cover?
  • Do you cover your workmanship warranty, or do you outsource it to a third-party company?
  • What does the manufacturers’ warranty cover?
  • Who provides the service for manufacturers’ warranties?
  • How long does the warranty last for major components like solar panels and inverters?  
  • Can the warranty be transferred if I sell my home? 
  • Are there any conditions or actions that could void the warranty?

General Questions:
  • Is the company doing the installation the same company the salesperson works for?
  • Is the salesperson an employee or just a commissioned salesperson?
  • Does the company have the appropriate licenses to do the work they are proposing?
  • How long has the company been in business? How long have they been working in this geography? 
  • What is the company’s ownership structure?

What Happens to Solar Panels When They Die?

We are approaching a period when many solar panels will be reaching the end of their useful lives. While solar waste only accounts for a small fraction of all global electronics waste, the U.S. needs to have a plan in place for addressing solar panels that are no longer viable. Many obsolete panels do unfortunately end up in landfills.

ReVision recycles any broken panels (usually caused by fallen trees, but occasionally an errant golf ball) with New Hampshire-based Aurum Recovery Group, keeping them out of landfills. This is not true industry-wide, however, highlighting the need for more sustainable practices across the solar field. Experts confirm that recycling is the answer, but we need government policies to encourage and support the practice. Joel Alder, ReVision’s Sustainability Coordinator, says “we’re proud of our sustainability efforts at ReVision, but we recognize that it’s just the beginning. We need to work towards a future where responsible end-of-life management for solar panels is the norm, not the exception.”

A solar panel has reached the end of its useful life when its ability to generate electricity has significantly decreased. This process takes 30 to 35 years. To understand what can come next for solar panels, it’s helpful to know more about what goes into them. 

What Are Solar Panels Made Of?

ReVision installs a type of solar panel known as a crystalline silicon module (C-Si). C-Si panels are made of silicon cells and a combination of glass, aluminum, plastic, copper, silver, and other special metals. The cells are made up of narrow slices of silicon, a material perfect for turning sunlight into electricity; it’s the second most abundant element in Earth’s crust (after oxygen).

When sunlight particles hit the silicon cell, it causes electrons to break away from the silicon atoms. These un-bonded electrons can then be captured and used to produce electricity. These silicon slices are either “poly” (many crystals), or “mono” (one crystal) based on their creation process.

The cells are then enclosed in a frame of plastic film, tempered glass, and aluminum to protect them from weather conditions like rain or snow.

What Are the Benefits of C-Si Panels?

C-Si panels are the most common type of solar panel sold in the United States. This is because: 

1.     They’re reliable.

C-Si modules produce electricity for 30+ years and can withstand harsh New England weather conditions. ReVision installs panels from manufacturers that offer a 25-year power production guarantee, so you can rest assured we only install panels any of our employee-owners would be proud to have on their roof. 

2.     They’re efficient.

C-Si module efficiencies range from 19% to 22.8%, meaning ~22.8% of incoming sunlight is converted into electricity. These are some of the most efficient residential panels on the market. Keep in mind that no machines run at 100% efficiency, meaning that some energy is always lost in the form of heat, sound, or other forms of waste during the process of converting one form of energy into another. For instance, gas-powered cars operate at around 30% efficiency, meaning around 65 cents of every dollar spent on gas goes to waste (EVs have a much higher efficiency, operating at around 73%, but that’s a topic for another blog post).  

The Recycling Process: A Step-by-Step Guide 


95% of the materials that go into C-Si solar panels can be recycled, setting the stage for an eco-friendly disposal process. The first step is to figure out what you’re going to do with the panels. Companies that specialize in solar panel recycling are a great option, but they often prefer to work with larger quantities. Luckily there are also many electronics waste companies capable of handling solar panels, including ReVision’s partner Aurum Recovery Group. The actual process of breaking down solar panels to be recycled starts with the following steps: 

  1. The company removes the aluminum frame and the junction box attached to the panel. 
  2. They then separate the glass from the silicon cell through a combination of thermal, mechanical, and chemical processes. 
  3. Finally, the silicon cells and special metals (silver, tin, copper, etc.) are purified by mechanically shredding the cells into fine particles that can then be separated and processed.

Addressing Waste Classification Concerns 

In considering the recycling process, it’s important to address concerns about the waste classification of solar panels, which is often a point of confusion. Throwing solar panels in a landfill is wasteful but not harmful. Labeling all solar panels as “toxic” waste is misleading. 99% of all components in solar panels are non-hazardous materials. Due to the other 1%, the EPA can’t definitively say whether all solar panels are considered hazardous waste. Because of this, current U.S. policy leaves it up to the producer of the panel to determine whether the panel has hazardous waste characteristics.

Of the few hazardous materials that are found in solar panels, the vast majority are found in “thin film” panels. These comprise less than 5% of solar panels sold in the U.S. and are primarily sold outside New England. Companies like First Solar, one of the largest producers of thin panels in the world, use robust lifecycle management processes to ensure any hazardous materials are captured and managed properly at the end of a panel’s life.

Why Recycle Solar Panels? 

While concerns about hazardous materials in solar panels are valid, it’s essential to understand the distinction between hazardous and non-hazardous materials in solar panels to recognize the potential of solar panel recycling.

The International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that by 2050, recycling solar panels could generate 78 million tons of raw materials worldwide. If ultimately reintroduced into the economy, the value of these raw materials could surpass $15 billion. So, why aren’t more solar panels recycled? It boils down to government policy. 

Moving Forward: Advocating for Better Recycling Policies 

Lawmakers recognize that U.S. solar panel recycling regulations fall far behind our European counterparts. EU regulations “require 85% collection and 80% recycling of the materials used in PV panels.” Compare that to a U.S projection from 2020 to 2050 which predicts we will recycle only 10% of materials in end-of-life solar panels. Unlike the EU, the U.S. currently does not require solar panels to be recycled.

This contrast shows that we need more economically viable recycling solutions in the U.S. The average cost to recycle a solar panel in the U.S. is $28. A supportive recycling policy that helps reduce this cost by just $10 could significantly boost U.S. recycling rates, raising them from 10% to 35%.

Seeing that our current regulations are outdated and stifling our recycling practices, lawmakers are working to change waste policy; as of late 2023, the EPA is developing a proposed rule to add solar panels to the universal waste regulations and states like California have already characterized solar panels as universal waste to promote recycling and reuse. As the adoption of solar energy expands, the policies and economic incentives for recycling need to expand too.

How Maine Battery Storage Owners Can Support the Grid and Earn Rewards

Homeowners in Maine are familiar with power outages: we have one of the most vulnerable grids in the country. The most recent winter storm left 50% of Central Maine Power customers in the dark. More than ever, the value of reliable energy sources is apparent. While solar energy is dependable (the sun will continue shining for the next five billion years), homeowners with solar arrays will still find themselves without power in the occurrence of an outage. This is to protect line workers from dangerous reverse currents. So how do you keep your solar working when the grid is down?

These systems store energy generated by a solar array, allowing homeowners to continue using their solar-produced electricity even during a power outage, keeping the lights on. ReVision installs two of the most popular and dependable battery storage units on the market, the Tesla Powerwall and SolarEdge Home. Now, there is further incentive to invest in battery backup for Mainers looking to bring energy resilience to their home and community.

Recognizing the importance of home battery storage, Efficiency Maine, an organization created to design and execute energy efficiency programs, recently rolled out the Small Battery Demand Management Program. Homeowners participating in the program can share their battery’s stored energy during high-demand periods, helping prevent blackouts. On top of providing community support, the program lets participants earn around $300 per year.  

Overview: 

Program Summary: 
  • Register your battery to support the grid during high demand and earn hundreds of dollars.   
Demand Events: 
  • These will occur 40-60 times between June 1st and September 30th (there will be no events during severe outages). 
Enrollment:
  • Sign up quickly through Tesla’s mobile app or Efficiency Maine’s web form (non-Tesla batteries are also eligible). You can opt in or out of events as you prefer.  
Incentives:
  • Earn $100 per kW of average discharge, paid through Tesla’s app or Efficiency Maine’s website in December.

What is the Small Battery Demand Management Program?

Efficiency Maine’s program compensates eligible battery owners for helping reduce the strain on the New England electric grid during times of high demand, called demand response events. These events will occur about 40 to 60 times between June 1st and September 30th, each lasting no more than three hours.

Participants will earn payment depending on the amount discharged from their battery during the events. Efficiency Maine will notify participants at least four hours before an event. Once enrolled, the only action required is to maintain a Wi-Fi connection to your battery during events; no further steps are necessary. 

When you discharge electricity from your Powerwall during peak demand grid conditions, it helps balance the overall stress on the grid. By entering the program, your battery will discharge up to 85% of its stored energy during these high-demand events. If you own a Powerwall, remember that Tesla’s warranty covers unlimited cycles, so the additional cycles from this program won’t affect their system’s warranty.    

How do I enroll?   

Eligible participants can enroll through the Tesla app or Efficiency Maine’s website. If you’re a Powerwall owner already enrolled through the website, you will be able to access the Virtual Power Plant section of the Tesla app when your enrollment is processed through Tesla. This process should take one to two weeks.  

If you own a different type of battery backup system, like Generac, Enphase, or SolarEdge, you can also enroll through Efficiency Maine’s website. Tesla strongly recommends Powerwall customers enroll through the app to simplify and expedite the process. Efficiency Maine recently released a Small Battery Incentive Calculator, where users can input their exact information to get a better understanding of their potential earnings. 

What are the benefits of participating?   

Grid Support:

Contribute to a more stable and sustainable energy system in Maine, reducing the need for expensive and polluting “peaker” power plants.   

Financial Incentives:

Receive $100 per kW of average discharge during demand response events, paid annually through Tesla’s app or Efficiency Maine’s website in December. Participating in these events will earn you around $300 a year, depending on how many events you participate in.   

Easy Management:

Participation can be easily managed through your Tesla app, allowing you to opt in or out of specific events. You set your backup reserve in the app so you can decide how much of your battery to share for each event. You can even change your backup reserve during an event and opt-out if needed. Just remember that any adjustments will affect your total payment since the incentive is based on the average total kW discharged during the whole program. (One quick caveat is that when enrolling through Tesla’s app, they will ask you for an account ID or number. They’re referring to your utility account number.)   

How does this program benefit my community?   

Participating in programs like this with multiple homes equipped with solar and batteries helps create a “virtual power plant,” stabilizing the grid and making it more resilient against outages while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Through Tesla’s app, you’ll see how much power your system is sending to the grid and the collective contribution of all participating homes in Maine. Enhancing the grid’s strength benefits all Mainers and is a step toward a cleaner energy future.   

By supplying your stored energy to the grid during times of high demand, you reduce the need for the grid to draw additional power from other sources, which can be more expensive and less efficient. Supplying stored energy from your Powerwall also reduces the need for costly and polluting power plants and delays the construction of expensive power lines – the cost of which is typically transferred to consumers’ electricity bills. Ultimately this program is designed to save all ratepayers money and prevent grid-wide outages.   

This program lets battery storage owners in Maine make money year over year throughout the lifetime of their Powerwall. As concerns over climate disasters mount and energy costs rise, more homeowners are turning to renewable energy options to achieve energy independence and enhance their energy resilience. Energy independence means gaining independence from utility companies, rising energy costs, and fossil fuels. Solar and home electrification improvements, such as heat pumps and Electric Vehicle charging, offer a pathway to increased independence and significant cost savings. While many solar-curious people perceive going solar as a purely environmental endeavor, homeowners nationwide go solar for the financial benefits and energy security that solar can offer in the face of volatile utility costs and increasing outages from climate-related disasters like storms and floods.

A research article published in the journal Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, further breaks down the relationship between household energy production and a country’s energy dependence, stating, “By changing the selection and use of household and motor vehicle technologies, households can reduce their energy consumption by nearly 30%—without waiting for new technologies, making major economic sacrifices, or losing a sense of well-being.” This decrease in home energy consumption would result in the overall US energy consumption dropping by 11%. Home energy independence will save money and help facilitate the United States’ green energy transition.  

How to Make Your Home Energy Independent 

Energy Efficiency:

Initiatives like home retrofits, using energy-efficient appliances, and focusing on design considerations can be the first steps towards achieving independence. Small, cost-effective measures can result in big savings. From utilizing CFL bulbs over incandescent ones to sealing structural gaps to ensure heat stays in the house, these changes can transform your home’s energy consumption. The International Energy Agency highlights that “energy savings can be achieved through relatively simple technological retrofits or behavioral changes.”

Solar panel installations can be tailored to your home’s energy needs and can be installed on rooftops or the ground. Community solar farms are another way to utilize solar energy, where you can purchase shares of a larger solar array to become a member. Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) optimize energy use in homes. With the help of machine learning and predictive algorithms, HEMS can make decisions on when to draw energy from the grid, the solar panels, or the battery, optimizing for cost and sustainability. They also offer insights and suggestions for further improving energy efficiency, such as suggesting the best times to run heavy appliances. A great example of a smart energy system is Sense.com. They offer in-home electrical panel monitoring, giving insight into the energy usage of different appliances.

Solar Fusion: Uniting ReVision and Sunbug with Nick d’Arbeloff

ReVision Energy’s acquisition of Massachusetts-based Sunbug Solar is unique because the two companies have melded together so easily. 55 Sunbug employees are now onboarded and part of the ReVision team. And while some of the branding decisions are still being worked out, the acquisition offers a unique lens into the evolving spirit of collaboration within the solar industry. Nick d’Arbeloff, former VP of commercial operations at Sunbug and now Director of Market Development at ReVision, says the overlapping values in the two companies is what led to them becoming one organization. While this change of scale comes with some challenges, the joining of the two companies has been mostly seamless and can be attributed to similar company cultures and values. 

Nick describes the merger as “two old friends deciding to get married.”

While statistics show that between 70 and 90% of mergers and acquisitions fail, the five months since the sale took place indicate that this fusion is bringing new energy, literally, to New England. Sunbug and ReVision share a natural compatibility: both are Certified B-Corps. Both companies have long recognized the importance of not just what they do, but how they do it, emphasizing community impact, employee benefits, and environmental responsibility. 

“One thing that’s really intriguing about this acquisition,” Nick says, “is that ReVision and Sunbug have known each other for a long time, and we’ve always liked each other and recognized our shared affinity for improving the planet. We’ve asked ReVision for advice and vice versa.”

The different geographic locations of ReVision and Sunbug is a welcome challenge, according to Nick. “I applaud ReVision’s insistence that we all spend time together monthly, developing relationships face-to-face, because you really need to get to know someone in person.” In the case of the commercial team, weekly meetings have helped the two entities learn from each other. “We’re getting the opportunity to meet other people, other members of the commercial team outside of Massachusetts, which is great, and we’re learning a lot from it. I feel as if I’m developing a deep understanding of the organization.”

Adding to the narrative of collaboration and shared values, Sunbug Solar’s recent achievement highlights the commitment to sustainability and community impact. In February, Sunbug won the 2023 Sustainable Business of The Year award from the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) of Massachusetts. This accolade was celebrated at a recent ceremony and recognizes businesses committed to a green and fair economy. “The work that Sunbug Solar – and now ReVision Energy – does is necessary to reverse the impacts of climate change and create a greener future,” said Laury Hammel, Executive Director at Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts. “Beyond their service to the community, it is clear that this team is committed to having sustainable business practices and fostering a fair and inclusive workplace for all.” Nick d’Arbeloff was also specifically acknowledged for his efforts in shaping solar policy and legislation.  

Further embodying his commitment to facilitating favorable solar policy is Nick’s recent election as the President of SEBANE. This organization aims to protect and promote the New England solar industry through informed policy intervention, coalition building, and stakeholder education. Lindsay Bourgoine, ReVision’s Director of Policy, also holds a position at SEBANE as the VP of Policy. SEBANE’s mission to unite solar companies mirrors the collaborative spirit seen in the Sunbug acquisition.

Your Employees Want Workplace EV Charging

If you’re a business owner, chances are you have employees who currently own or are considering buying an all-battery electric car or a plug-in hybrid. If not now, they certainly will in the future. You have also likely noticed a shift in consumer sentiment towards choosing businesses that employ environmentally sustainable business practices. Workplace electric vehicle (EV) charging is one of many ways to promote sustainability in your organization and accommodate employees who are already driving electric. Still not convinced? We’ve got some data to prove it.  

Convenience and Productivity 

Introducing charging stations at the workplace gives employees who drive EVs the dual benefit of convenience and productivity. What may be considered an amenity now will eventually be a necessity, as more employees need to charge their vehicles during work hours. Providing charging on-site means they won’t need to seek out charging stations elsewhere.   

Attracting and Retaining Talent  

As competition in the job market has increased, it’s harder for businesses to distinguish themselves as desirable employers. Providing charging stations is a way to differentiate your business; it’s a notable perk for prospective employees. A 2022 survey by Deloitte reveals that the climate crisis is a top concern for Gen Zs and millennials, and that two out of five turned down a job because it didn’t align with their personal values. On top of that, younger workers who were satisfied with their employers’ environmental impact were more likely to stay with the company for more than five years. Providing charging stations shows a company’s commitment to sustainability and addresses the growing demand for EV charging stations, appealing to a diverse workforce. 

This growing environmental awareness is apparent in the rising adoption rate of EVs in New England. The ISO-NE 2023 Transportation Electrification Forecast predicts that the number of EVs on the road will be 32 times greater in ten years (a 14% increase from 2022’s prediction). With an increase in both the adoption rate of EVs and a preference for environmentally conscious employers, workplace charging is becoming a more powerful recruitment and retention tool. 

Financial Incentives

Attracting and maintaining a talented workforce and reducing turnover rates have clear financial benefits for business owners and their employees. Businesses generally have lower energy prices and can extend these cost benefits to employees, offering them a more affordable charging solution at work than at home. Workplace charging can also be added to a benefits package.  

One of ReVision’s Solar Designers, Erik Mitchell, drives an EV and uses ReVision’s charging stations frequently: “One of the big benefits is I don’t have to rely fully on charging at home. Being able to charge while I am at the office is convenient and helpful.”  

Reducing employee turnover leads to big cost savings. On average, 3.8% of employees leave their jobs each month. (This means that for a company of 500 employees, 19 people are leaving every month!) The average cost-per-hire in 2023 was $4,700. The graph below shows the cost savings an organization with 500 employees could expect with a reduction in monthly employee turnover. By reducing employee turnover by half a percent, this 500-person business could save $141,000 in one year!

Because of the environmental advantages that EVs offer, many lawmakers are working to increase the number of EVs around the country to help meet climate goals. Currently, the Federal government offers a tax credit for up to 30% of the installation costs of charging stations. New England states offer a wide variety of additional financial incentives, including more tax credits, grants, and rebates. These incentives help alleviate the upfront costs associated with the installation of EV charging stations, making it a more realistic investment for companies. Supporting Corporate Sustainability 

Installing EV chargers helps businesses lower their carbon emissions, enabling them to achieve their broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals. These emissions reductions earn points for sustainable building certifications like the LEED, STARS, and Green Globes certifications, which are tangible demonstrations of a firm’s dedication to combating climate change. Workplace charging can also improve a company’s environmental impact area of their B Corp score, another demonstration of a commitment to CSR. Highlighting these efforts in annual reports and marketing initiatives can bolster a company’s brand image and reputation.

Encouraging Girls in STEAM with Girls At Work and ReVision Energy

With just over two percent of electricians in the country being women, it’s a challenge helping girls envision the career option for themselves. ReVision Energy’s Climate Educator, Stacy Brown, is working with a nonprofit organization called Girls At Work in Manchester, NH in the first session of their new STEAM program to spark interest in young women: “Our goal is to create fun, engaging learning opportunities in this amazing after-school program so that girls will see that a career in the solar industry as electricians, installers, or educators is a viable option for them.”  

Girls At Work is dedicated to empowering girls through woodworking and other hands-on activities. Through these experiences, they aim to help girls discover their inner strength and build confidence. Founded in 2000 by Elaine Hamel, Girls At Work has worked with over 20,000 girls through building and learning. Organized by Kaylee Richard, a high school senior and alum of Girls At Work, this STEAM program (which stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math) is both an educational curriculum and a journey toward empowerment. A significant focus of the program is to challenge the stereotypes surrounding STEAM fields and trades, especially for girls.

“If they see [options] now, they’ll be aware of all of them and be able to make a more educated decision about what they want to do,” says Kaylee, who wants to help other girls discover their direction. “They’re not seeing as many role models in the STEM fields,” she says, “so hopefully this is changing that.”    

The Power of Hands-on Learning

The STEAM program, spanning eight weeks, uses a variety of hands-on activities to engage the group of girls from Manchester Southside Middle School. One activity, “The Tale of Two Thermometers,” involves placing two thermometers under lamps, one covered in plastic wrap, to mimic the greenhouse effect, allowing the girls to grasp how these gases trap heat in our atmosphere visually.

Kaylee, reflecting on the hands-on focus of the program says, “[The kids] are totally into it because it’s so different from the education they’re getting from school. When they come here, we put everything in their hands. So, they love it.” 

Stacy further celebrates the power of hands-on learning: “Through different hands-on experiments, we challenge them to understand things like greenhouse gases, circuits, water wheels, solar cars, and windmills. We have a lot of laughs together but from my perspective, it’s a thrill to see their faces light up with new knowledge and excitement about what they are learning.” 

Beyond the Classroom

STEAM programs and classes are a great way to tackle the climate crisis in schools. Since climate damage can be an overwhelming topic, hands-on activities help illustrate the crisis and leverage the urgency to make positive change. What makes these STEAM-based experiences particularly impactful is that they can focus on solutions without enhancing climate anxiety, growing a generation of change-makers.

“When allowed to experiment with these activities, the girls naturally began asking questions, problem-solving, and collaborating. They learned and applied soft skills such as listening, compromising, and dividing responsibility,” says Stacy, considering her experience leading this session.

“It reaffirmed my belief that student-centered, place-based education, where students can explore and inquire about their surroundings and their communities, bolsters both practical and critical thinking skills, along with a love for learning.”

EV Charging Case Study: ReVision Energy Headquarters

Through a combination of federal grants and state efficiency programs, ReVision Energy has been selected as the designated installer for many of these charge ports, and we’d like to highlight some of them in this column. 

Solar-Powered EV Charging: ReVision Energy Headquarters, South Portland

In 2023, ReVision Energy overhauled the EV charging system at our South Portland headquarters so that we could test technology we hope to eventually bring to our customers. We are currently using twelve Level 2 32A Evercharge networked units capable of load management features. These chargers are partially powered by our rooftop solar array.

This switch aimed to streamline and expand our charging capabilities without having to increase the size of our electrical service. Evercharge’s technology stands out by allowing power sharing based on existing electrical loads. This enables more ports to leverage limited power by distributing it according to the number of vehicles and their respective charging needs over time.  

In addition to improving reliability, the new networked chargers are easy to repair, and provide hosts with valuable insights into charger usage, electricity consumption, and fleet management. This will ultimately allow us to install large multi-port projects elsewhere, serving both the public and workplace charging needs.

EV Charging Case Study: DC Fast Chargers at Mobil

DC Fast Chargers at Mobil: Lewiston



In 2023, ReVision Energy completed the installation of one of the first fast chargers in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Mobil station owner Nino Touse recognized the need to fill charging gaps along the I-95 stretch and, with the help of an Efficiency Maine Volkswagen subsidy, took the initiative.

ReVision installed two 50 kW DC fast chargers (DCFCs), ChargePoint CTE 250 models, providing turnkey installation service. These public chargers serve both local and visiting drivers, contributing significantly to the EV infrastructure in the region. The installation was marked by a memorable ribbon-cutting ceremony organized by the Mayor of Lewiston’s office and the Chamber of Commerce.

EV Charging Case Study: Workplace Chargers at Hannaford’s Headquarters

Hannaford’s Workplace Charging: Scarborough

In 2017, ReVision Energy teamed up with Enphase to install four Level 2, 32A chargers at Hannaford’s Scarborough, ME headquarters. This was one of the first workplace charging stations in state! The reliable charging units from Enphase have been operational since their installation, serving both employees and customers at Hannaford’s headquarters.  

This was only the beginning of Hannaford’s EV charging journey. Hannaford extended their commitment to clean energy by facilitating the placement of Maine’s first five DC Fast Chargers at their retail locations along I-95, from York through Augusta. They have also expanded EV charging in their store parking areas, installing more than 163 plugs at 31 stores (and growing) throughout the Northeast. 

In addition to EV charging, Hannaford has made huge steps towards greater sustainability in recent years, and has set a goal of being 100% powered by renewable energy in 2024.   

Hannaford’s workplace and public EV charging highlight the potential for businesses to easily mesh their sustainability goals with customer and employee needs.
