As an expected 6,500 runners navigate Saturday's TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race, a solar generator built by two Maine companies will be powering operations at the finish line. Loudspeakers and other equipment will use electricity from a "Solar Outreach System" designed and assembled by ReVision Energy, a solar equipment installer headquartered in South Portland, and Pika Energy, a Westbrook-based maker of solar energy storage products.

ReVision is part of a cooperative of about 50 American solar companies, working with a disaster relief agency in Puerto Rico to provide portable emergency power trailers. The first three units were recently manufactured in the North Andover, Mass. warehouse of ReVision Energy.
Co-founder Phil Coupe said, "With almost one million American citizens on Puerto Rico still needing power, we have a responsibility to do all we can to provide urgent relief."
Each unit can provide 300 to 400 watts of emergency power while simultaneously purifying up to 600 gallons water a day. They will be loaned to the communities for the duration of their need and then be redeployed to other disaster areas around the globe as needs and events dictate.
