Even with the heavy rainfall we received more than 100 people attended our Summer Solstice Grand Opening Event last Friday. The grand opening was a chance for people to view our new showroom and to receive an understanding of our systems. In our showroom are two of BioHeat’s high efficiency wood boilers, a Scantec and a Froling. The Froling is hooked up and will provide heat for our offices and warehouse come winter. There is a 10 tube solar hot water collector array on display, as well as a solar hot water flat plate. A Stiebel Eltron dual coil solar storage tank sits on the showroom floor and receives solar gain from evacuated tube collectors that are on our roof. A SunPower solar electric module and inverter are also available to view. Our showroom is open Monday through Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm. Appointments are not necessary but are suggested to ensure the best possible person will be here to discuss your solar energy or wood boiler needs. The grand opening event was also a chance for community members to get to know each and other sustainable local businesses or organizations. We are appreciative to all those who helped to make this event a success and would like to thank the Pete Kilpatrick Band, Allagash Brewing Company, Maine Mead Works, Local Sprouts Cooperative, Katie Made Desserts, Mad Girl World, MEBSR, Maine Green Building Supply, FW Horch Sustainability Goods, Reverb, Sierra Club, and Move On.

53 Danforth Street, a Maine State Housing complex recently constructed in Portland, is utilizing the sun to preheat the domestic hot water for all of its 47 units. 21 Chromagen solar hot water collectors sit on the roof and heat an 820 gallon thermal storage tank. The preheat system design moves cold water into the thermal storage tank before it enters the existing indirect hot water tanks. The system, backed by natural gas, is designed to produce over 190 million Btu’s of clean, renewable energy each year. The building’s owner and developer is The Szanton Company of Portland. Wright-Ryan Architects were the general contractors working on the construction of the building. The mechanical contractor, who we worked for on this project, is Southern Maine Plumbing and Heating. Maine State Housing requires all their developers to at least consider solar thermal as an option for new construction. Maine State Housing Authority has been a leader in the adoption of renewable energy; in 2006 ReVision Energy installed a 10kW grid tied solar electric system on their office building in Augusta. Maine State Housing Authority finances the installation of solar hot water applications in multifamily housing, such as this one, and is using the anticipated revenue from the sale of carbon emission reductions to subsidize the lower interest rate of the solar loan. Maine State Housing also offers a residential loan for energy efficient upgrades including the installation of solar hot water or solar electric systems. Their low interest loan program is called the Home Energy Loan Program, or HELP loan. View their website to learn more. www.mainehousing.org

Getting to know John Capron
John, a native of Foxboro, Massachusetts, is a graduate of Business Administration and Studio Arts from the University of New Hampshire. John started with ReVision Energy in 2007 as part of the installation crew. He now one of our project managers and training liaisons based out of the Portland office. Utilizing his artistic skills, John also takes most of our installation photos. Prior to joining the renewable energy field, John spent 18 years in the film and TV production industry. Seeing the waste that was created from that industry was one of the reasons he opted for a new career. John was an assistant producer in a number of documentaries. You can view two pieces of his work online, Firewoman and Hairdo made for WGBH in Boston. View John’s work here John lives on a homestead farm in Bowdoinham with an ever changing cast of family and friends. On his roof is a 40 tube solar hot water collector array providing domestic hot water for his home. There is solar powered lighting for the farm’s outhouse. John’s favorite farm chores include mule powered fire wood harvesting and composting. His preferred forms of transportation include his sailboat, his grease car diesel Sedan, and his motorcycle, in that order. | |||
There’s so much going on; come join in the summertime fun!
July 9th - Solar Open House 6:00-7:30 pm 8 Devons Wood Drive in Kittery, Maine. Come join us for our next solar open house event to view this beautifully new constructed home utilizing solar hot water panels to meet the domestic hot water demands of this family. This home has two 20 tube solar hot water evacuated tube collectors on the south facing roof to heat an 80 gallon solar storage tank. The tank is connected to the propane boiler, which serves as the back up to the system. These home owners also installed necessary wiring when building their home so that adding solar electric panels would be easy and accessible when they were ready. Come meet the homeowners to learn the processes they took to building their energy efficient home. We will be meeting at 8 Devon Woods Road in Kittery at 6pm. From South From North July 25th - Intro to Active Solar 9:30am at the Shelter Institute, Woolwich.
